This study provides an overview of the impacts which have fundamentally influenced the status of Austria's river landscapes both morphologically and hydrologically. This includes above all watercourse regulations and land uses in the valleys as well as hydro power induced effects such as impoundment, flow diversion and hydro peaking. The results shows the major Austrian rivers to be seriously affected. The situation in Austria as described in this article emphasises the need for multidisciplinary management concepts making allowance for the effects of the different uses.
