Descriptif du projet:

The French Global Environment Facility (FFEM) is funding the project “Preservation of Lake Chad: a contribution to the development strategy for the lake”, whose recipient is the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC).
IOWater has been in charge of implementing the third component of this project, which consists in several services focused on the entry into force of the Water Charter, and strengthening of relationships with the other Basin Organizations. This mission has also included the popularization of the « Convention on the Law of Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses », adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York in 1997.

The entry into force of the Charter is based on the organization of national sensitisation workshops for the ratification of this document and the Convention of New York 1997, along with the support for the writing of several Charter’s appendices.

Descriptif des services rendus par l'OIEau:

The main mission of IOWater’s experts was to help the LCBC go through the different steps of the project by using their professional experience in the area of transboundary water resources management.

During this project, several awareness workshops were organized and led by IOWater’s experts. Representatives of the LCBC, different ministries, and decentralized decision makers attended these workshops. IOWater’s experts were also involved in the drafting of the Water Charter’s appendices. Exchanges with the other Basin Organizations of the region were also established.

IOWater’s staff has beforehand organized the entire proceedings of each activity, provided the thematic experts, and taken care of all questions related to the logistics of the project, in coordination with the LCBC.
