Nouvelle étude sur les fonds de pêche du banc d'Arguin et de ses abords campagne de la «Thalassa», Janvier-février 1971

The great size of the continental shelf, the low landscape of the coasts, the lack of a sailing channel, are factors which make the precise localization of a ship on the bank of Arguin difficult, if not impossible. As a result, the data on the topography, though important, is still incomplete or imprecise. It is almost non-existent for the wide and shallow central shelf located inside the reef area where dangerous sailing adds up to these measuring difficulties. Filling these gaps is needed if we want to continue the exploration of this region and the assessment of the stocks. Concerning the nature of the seabed, a spreading of the sand towards the open-sea is observed, which is the direct consequence of the nearness of the desert, the action of the winds and the lack of fluvial inputs. However, one area is an exception to this rule: it is the south-western part of the bank where the continental shelf is smaller and the slope particularly steep. This area is characterized by a muddy seabed, at relatively small depths, leading to a predominance of some species. It seems that the rising of deep waters caused by a very characteristic welling up that has already been observed by us off the Cape Timiris could be the cause of this silting up.
