On the 21st of June 1983, the I.S.T.P.M. notified the Head of the French Marine Affairs for the Bretagne-Vendée area about the presence of a toxic phytoplanktonic organism in the waters of the Bay of the Vilaine which could cause gastrointestinal intoxications to shellfish eaters. Simultaneously, the Departmental Management Service of Social and Health Affairs (DDASS) of the Loire-Atlantique region reported numerous intoxication cases caused by the consumption of shellfishes.
