GROUNDWATER ECOLOGY IN RIVER-FLOOD PLAIN

Okostrom, T. Gonser. - DIVERS - 2000
Surface water/groundwater exchange processes in river-flood plain ecosystems (Brenno, Tessin) are a key factor controlling habitat diversity and thereby biodiversity in riverine landscapes. The objectives of this study are threefold: 1. To characterize and quantify hydrologic exchange processes between the Brenno River and the adjacent alluvial aquifer, to show how these processes are decisive for the creation of differing aquatic habitats on and within the flood plain and to document the biota characteristic of these diverse habitats. 2. To determine the ecological impacts of hydropower generation (through alteration of the discharge regime and sediment transportation rates) onthe affected river-flood plain systems. 3. To devise hydropower generation strategies and mitigative measures that minimize ecological impairment of river-floodplain ecosystems.
