Boiser une parcelle (agricole ou non) consiste à planter des arbres sur un terrain qui n'était pas précédemment boisé, dans le but de créer une forêt ou un espace boisé. Le changement d’occupation du sol entraine des modifications fortes pour le fonctionnement hydrique, en favorisant l'infiltration des pluies et la rétention de l’eau dans le sol, et en réduisant le ruissellement. Par ailleurs, l’évapotranspiration de la végétation dans les milieux arborés restitue de l’eau dans l’atmosphère notamment sous forme de brume.
