EUROPE'S WATER : AN INDICATOR-BASED ASSESSMENT

Assessment of the quality and quantity of Europe's water. The geographical scope of this report is the European Union, EFTA and EU accession and candidate countries. Four water issues are assessed: ecological quality, eutrophication and organic pollution of water, hazardous substances and water quantity. This is done on the basis of 57 indicators selected for their representativeness and relevance. Using these indicators, the report seeks to answer a number of questions that have been formulated to assess whether the broad objectives and targets of EU water policy are being achieved and to indicate where policy gaps may be occurring.
