Improved water data management at the national level and at the Nakanbé basin level, Sustainable Financing Mechanisms (SFM) Implementation schedule 2018- 2020: phase IV Project financed by Loire-Bretagne Water Agency Detailed project description The Nakanbé Water Agency (AEN) and Loire- Bretagne Water Agency (AELB) signed in October 2010 and renewed in 2017 a cooperation agreement «for the development of joint actions in the field of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and decentralised cooperation». Under the protocol, the OiEau has been providing institutional and technical support to the AEN since 2010, with the technical and financial support of the AELB. During phase 4, priority was given to providing support for the development of the basin's planning tools, for the elaboration of the SDAGE and the implementation of the Multiannual Intervention Programme. The Nakanbé Water Agency has identified as a priority, within the Nakanbé SDAGE, the development and implementation of the Massili-Ziga SAGE. The main objective of this planning document is to secure quantity and quality of water resources in the sub-basin in a context of water scarcity and adaptation to the effects of climate change, through the coherence of actions on the Local Water Committees’ territory. Outcomes and prospects Main current results Advances of Phase 4 are mainly characterised by: support for the development of the Nakanbé SDAGE and the Multiannual Intervention Programme, capacity building of agents on hydrological modelling and valorisation of water data, implementation of resilient practices for adaptation to the effects of climate change, role and organisation of the Agency's bodies, and finally, support for synergy actions with decentralised cooperation projects and contribution to the organisation of dialogue and experience-sharing frameworks with Benin, Togo (Mono River Basin) and Senegal. Focus on: The Nakanbé Water Agency is taking the lead in addressing the impacts of climate change on water resources in its territory, through two levels: planning documents (SDAGE and SAGE) and activities of Local Water Committees. The workshop on adaptation strategies to the climate change impacts enabled to develop technical sheets for integrating adaptation and mitigation measures to the climate change impacts into the Massili-Ziga priority SAGE. Adaptation and mitigation measures to combat flooding in urban areas (particularly the capital Ouagadougou) were the subject of an in-depth study. Prospects Phase 5 of the project started at the end of 2020. Priority is given to the technical support of the AEN activities in the field and the capacity building of its bodies (Basin Committee and Local Water Committee of the Massili-Ziga SAGE in particular), to strengthening the regional dialogue frameworks on IWRM in West Africa (between Togo, Benin, Ivory Coast, Senegal), and finally to the consolidation of the links between the decentralised cooperation projects and the present IWRM institutional project. 6 BURKINA FASO
