OPTIMAL PLACING AS A TOOL FOR REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS OF FISH FARMING

Harri Helminen - DIVERS - 1997
The aim of the project is to find in local scale the least vulnerable sites for fish farming in the Archipelago Sea. During the preparatory stage (1997-98) a new monitoring scheme for routine use will be developed. It will be based on the most prominent existing methods (biomonitoring, flow measurements, participatory planning). During the cloning stage the new scheme will be applied to fish farming areas (Hiittinen, Kustavi, Houtskari) whose licences have to be renewed in the near future. The summarizing stage (in 2001) produces a GIS-based general guidance tool for the Archipelago Sea, which will be used to direct fish farming to the most suitable areas. The guidance tool will also be applied in planning and implementation of new statutory monitoring programs.
