The concept of River Basin Management instead of project to project planning has been found of immense help to make optimum and sustainable water utilisation. The river Sabarmati is one of the major rivers of Gujarat where water availability per capita is the lowest in India and the average annual water availability per ha of culturable area is second lowest in India. The Sabarmati basin is the classic example of increasing demands and conflicts which necessitates the River Basin Management. The Sabarmati Basin has been proposed as a pilot project under Indo French Bilateral Programme for River Basin Management as per French model.
