SUMMARY OF THE PRESENTATION
In the Sahel, water is an element of survival and strongly affects social and economic development. As food security and desertification control are dependent on this rare commodity, it has always been at the centre of the concerns of our organization. Thus, from its inception in 1973, CILSS action in the sector of rational management of water resources for a sustainable development of the Sahel has concerned the following aspects:
- Knowledge of the resource;
- Development of the countries' capacity through vocational training programmes;
- Support to the countries in formulating and implementing coherent water policies and strategies;
- Promotion of participatory actions for a sound resource management.
