CAPACITY BUILDING FOR SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF WATER RESOURCES
Sustainable
Energy and Environment Division/UNDP
One UN Plaza, New York, N.Y. 10017
Abstract
Building on its past experience UNDP recently has sharpened its technical cooperation approach to focus on capacity building for sustainable management of water resources and the aquatic environment. Operating within the framework of strategies adopted by the Earth Summit, other international conferences and the UN Commission on Sustainable Development, UNDP is committed to ensuring that a broad range of stakeholders is supported in playing their role in managing water resources sustainably. Four case studies (Peru, Mexico, Mali, Ghana) illustrate how capacity building concepts are applied at the country level. As a first step in this process, national teams carry out water sector assessments and policy reviews as a basis for determining long term approaches to institutional and human resources development within an enabling policy and legal environment.
