Monitoring the hydrological cycle and the phenomena changing due to human interference is of elementary importance for the national integrated water management. The Hungarian water management is based on the monitoring covering more and more water elements. The observation, data collection and dissemination have been regulated quite a long time ago. Recent development is the biannual status reports: Hydraulic structures are also monitored according to governmental regulations standardized in last two decades. For the multipurpose monitoring the Danube Early Warning System is introduced, it covers the Hungarian Danube upstream from Budapest. The comprehensive review refers to up-to-date papers related to the monitoring systems.
